We’re headed to Abu Dhabi to talk about Furious 7, this time with Derek Lawrence: journalist and author of the upcoming book, A Quarter-Mile at a Time: The Oral History of the Fast & Furious Franchise! After learning about his new book (its format, release date, and what he learned from his interviews), we share a mutual admiration of Vin Diesel’s Instagram and talk about what Fast Forever will look like (as well as what fans actually want). Derek remembers a time when his friends splintered over Tokyo Drift vs. Cars, talks about his love for Fast and Furious and Hitch, and shares his favorite Fast interviews.
We talk about whether Fast Forever could mark a return to Furious 7, reexamine Kurt Russell’s presence in the franchise, and wonder why we haven’t seen a Shaw family movie yet. Derek talks about what he loves most about Furious 7 (and what he’d remove). We share new theories about the Vin/Rock feud and who Samantha Hobbs’s mom may be. Derek names the only writers he would trust with writing Fast movies, gives Jordana Brewster credit for her emotion in this movie, and tells us a fun story about his rapport with Sung Kang.
